But why would stalling on the fence count more toward “octagon control” than Aldo stuffing every takedown attempt? Is that not also controlling where the fight takes place?

This fight was a great example (as mentioned above) of how Pride’s card system was a great concept for MMA.

Fighters should be penalized for stalling, if you are the superior fighter, then why are you holding someone instead of advancing the position and looking for the finish?

So its a bummer, but it is because of the rules.

Aldo knew the rules and should not have accepted that position as long as he did.

No, it’s not. Reread the scoring rules. The direction is basically this: take the most effective part of the round and pick who did better at it. Only when that is even, do you move to other criteria.
IF the most effective part of the round was the failed grappling, the decision would be correct. However, his wrestling was FAR from effective. The most effective part of pretty much every round was Aldo’s striking.
