“Buh I read that your prime is x years old to x years old based on a meta analysis of football and baseball stats, so that means a guy in MMA is in his prime then even when he’s crippled with injuries and has a hundred fights and 2 military careers by then”
Alex is right now about the same age that Mirko was when he lost back to back to back to Mir, Nelson, and Schuab, via getting outstruck on the feet. Mirko wasn’t old when he was KOd by Gonzaga. He was in his early 30s. He was outstruck by Fedor, and crushed by Randleman, when he was about 31 and 30, respectively.
Poatan’s record is way cleaner. He hasn’t been outstruck in MMA other than Isreal, who is elite and who Poatan has split his two matches with.
That said, I don’t mind calling you in 2030. PM me your number.
Poatan also has half the fights Mirko did when he fought Gonzaga.
Fedor is a consensus top 3 hw of all time, that he narrowly got out struck by him isn’t a big deal to me.
Mirko also fought 8 times the year Kevin KO’d him. AP is one of the more active fighters in the modern UFC and has never fought more than 3x in a year. Shit happens when you fight that often.
Old and prime are two very different things in this sport. Plenty of people like AP start later in life and peak later, plenty of people have no functioning knees or non generative discs in the neck by 30. When you compound that with military service, it’s not a simple “he’s x years old so he’s in his prime” calculation
He got out struck by a guy who got picked apart and embarrassed by Sean Strickland man.
Jiri landed shots on him. Jan was at the very least on his level striking, and had a very close decision in a primarily striking fight with him.
Just because he hasn’t gotten sparked doesn’t mean he’s had better standup in my opinion. Mirko soundly outstruck everyone but Fedor before he left pride, even if he did get caught by Randleman. Including Igor.
Both are great, there is no need to diminish one’s achievements to raise up the other’s.
I will say, some of you arent giving Cro Cop enough credit. The ppl he fought in K-1 were some of the greatest strikers to ever live. He had a whole career there before MMA. There is a lot of context that is being overlooked.
Its a close fight. Cro Cop has the advantage in a ring and Poatan in a cage, but it could go either way.
Again, two of my favorites so there is no bias here.
Fighting is such a weird sport. MMA is different than most sports for some reason.
In most sports people get remembered for their highest point. In MMA people get remembered for their lowest points.
Something in our psyche. Even in BJJ people are remembered for their high points. Degle was the first person that ever pointed that out to me. He told me to compete more and not worry about losing, because no one remembers the tournaments you bounce first round, everyone remembers big tournaments you win. He said it’s not like MMA, where taking fights you shouldn’t will change how people remember you forever
I think he’d do really well. I don’t think he’d tap out verbally to Junior Dos Santos while he was standing on his feet and had his wits about him.
Jordan was still the best player in the league at an age where Cro Cop was piling up losses. Cro Cop was outstruck by Randleman and Fedor at about 30 and 31 years old. He lost, due to standup striking, to Mir, Schaub, and Roy Nelson at about 35 years old. Jordan was still winning championships and MVPs. Poatan was still very much at the top of his game at that age.
