Reading an Ali bio, and I just passed the point where he fought for the HW title for the first time. Decided to watch it, and it’s a hell of a fight, so i figured I’d post it.
It does end shadily but the fight until then is great

Nothing shady about this fight except whatever was on Liston’s gloves and got in Clay’s eyes. Masterful execution of a classic boxing strategy by Ali. Lateral movement was on point and kept Sonny tuning so that he could never get his feet set and throw bombs.
The way Liston quit led to an investigation.
Thanks for watching
He quit on his stool after getting his ass beat and realizing that he had no realistic path to victory. It was basically a ‘no mas’ scenario like Leonard v Duran II…
Ya he said his arm hurt. Pretty weird for a champion to quit over that.
I agree he had no path. He didn’t even train for the fight haha.
Pretty unfortunate Liston didn’t end up with a more well known legacy. George Foreman said Liston was the biggest hitter and meanest bastard he ever got in ring with. That’s crazy considering he fought Lyle, Frazier, Norton, Morrison, Briggs etc
Foreman said Liston was the only guy who was ever able to stop him dead in his tracks with 1 punch.
absolutely masterful performance and an all-time classic
Except for at least one gift decision, Ali lost to Norton at least two out of their three fights.
