Could Tanner have beaten Wandy back in the day?

Tanner was offered to fight Wandy with the winner to face Frank Shamrock for title after Tanner’s win at UFC 19. Tanner was 16-1 and only lost to the much larger Heath Herring. Wandy was 5-2 with losses to Belfort and Martiano. Tanner was a beast in those days and had more sub knowledge than most. I think Tanner would have taken it.

RIP to Evan. I was a big fan of his back in the day. But hell fuck no. That would’ve been an absolutely terrrrrible matchup for him. Wanderlei would’ve shortened his career something fierce.

Evan was a tough guy. Wandy was a tougher guy with a little more polish and a lot more pop. It would’ve been ugly.

I mean it’s possible but wayyyyyyy improbable. Prime Wand was the greatest LHW for a few years.

Tanner was 18-1 back in 99 and had only lost to the much bigger Heath Herring whom he had previously beaten. Wand was 7-2. I think this fight would have been more competitive than people think.

They were supposed to fight for chance to fight Frank. I think either of them could have gave Frank hell. Evan knew submissions pretty well at that time and knew how to defend them.

Lots of old school fights we missed Horn vs Tanner, Horn vs Wandy, Horn was winning that fight against Frank until he kinda fell into that kneebar.
