You don’t know how Russian names work. He didn’t change his last name. He changed his patronymic name. In America, middle name is not necessarily patronymic name. Say, we have Donald John Trump, but his father’s name is not John, it’s Fred. I don’t know if Johnson had a middle name before, but even if he had it is unlikely it was the name of his father. But now he has a proper patronymic name. His full name now is Kevin Vladimirovich Johnson, not first name Kevin last name Vladimirovich. That means that his father’s name is Vladimir [Putin]. He can still go by Blue if he wants. Or he wants to use his patronymic as his new nickname, that’s fine too.
