Kung Fu Sparring

It actually happened to Wilson twice.

As to why those KO losses occurred, even though they’re similar in ways, they’re also quite different. They use different stances, the distances at which you fight is different & kickboxer often don’t have good enough hands to make the transition to boxing.

Don definitely fell into that category.

He wasn’t a Jean Yves or a Bob Therman.

He was more of a Superfoot Wallace, in that he would out point guys with his phenomenal front kick.

Hey, speaking of Jean Yves Theriault, I fought on an undercard of his in Kingston, Ontario back in 1986. I was brought in on 3 days notice to fight the Canadian light-middleweight champion, Jersey Long in the chief support. It was my first & only PKA bout. I fought Long to a draw & we were supposed to meet again in Montreal a couple of months later but I blew out my knee in training & I needed reconstructive surgery which put me on the shelf for over a year. That was the end of my kickboxing days because boxing was how I made my living & kickboxing put me on the couch. Kickboxing didn’t pay enough to bother with. Aside from the injury though I had fun with it & it got me awarded my first black belt.

Wowwwww

Thank you for sharing this…

…

Any chance you know where in time Jerry Rhome is?
Ever hear any stories as to how he’s doing?

Now of course he came back after a broken orbital bone to defeat BAD Brad Hefton for the PKA HW World title…

Have you by chance heard how he has been all these years after his massive upset??

God Bless you brother, thank you for sharing this.

Wow :ok_hand:

Thanks, bro, but I’m no big deal. I was just an obsessive kid who grew up to be a fighter & not a particularly well-known one at that. But that’s OK. I wouldn’t change much. My actual fighting career was filled with sporadic & infrequent fights due to injuries & bad management but it left me available for some awesome opportunities as a paid sparring partner for some of the biggest names of my era, Sure, I got my ass kicked a lot but I was good enough to hold my own for weeks at a time & if that’s my legacy, then I’m cool with it.

Oh, BTW, I’m sorry I don’t know anything about Rhome at all. I remember when he beat Hefton but that’s about it.

Your effort was admirable, but mistaken.

Can you show me when a Kyo fighter ever used the ā€œinsideā€ block or utilized the horse stance in a fight? They teach techs that are rarely used in a fight if at all.

And teaching ONLY body shots creates terrible habits such as this one:

Notice how the Kyo fighter reacts to a face punch? He went down immediately. What kind of wimpy reaction is that? Even that Thai boxer ate a face shot with ease seconds ago.

Even though Kyo training is legendarily hard, I stand by my statement.

However, I would rather train in Kyo than to have no training at all.

Although I agree with you on San Shou (now called Sanda), you are mistaken when it comes to Wilson. Previous to kickboxing, he was a Goju-ryu practitioner under Chuck Merriman, then he got into Pai Lum kung-fu under ā€œSifu Danielsā€ when his brother introduced him to it.

I don’t think there’s evidence of Wilson practicing or competing in San Shou.

he only lost 2 out of 6 matches. Not too shabby.

Maybe…

San Shou might be the only Kung Fu that actually works.

Damn, bro, are you sure?

My bad. I’d have bet the house on my version but now that you mention it I’m remembering his beginnings in Goju-Ryu. But I’m drawing a blank on his studying Pai Lum. But I’ll defer to your more complete knowledge. Thanks for setting me straight.
Now all I have to do is try to recall which fighter had his beginnings in San Shou & figure why I got him confused Don Wilson. Lmao.

See, I love these sorts of debates where no one is afraid of being proven wrong because we’d rather dismiss our pride in the gaining of new knowledge. Full respect, my friend.

Well, after a bit of research, I realized where my brain fart came from. Somehow I’d confused Don Wilson & Cung Le. How, I don’t know since they’re from 2 different kickboxing sports & they were about a decade apart in their heydays. But I’m sure the fact that they both starred in a plethora of martial arts B-movies didn’t help. Lol.

Again, thanks for supplying the truth & being cool about it.

Wrong! Wilson was a pak mei white dragon stylist, which was a bullshit style made up by Ed Parker’s cousin, Danny pai. Wilson was a very good folkstyle wrestler and American football player at the coast guard academy so he was much rougher than the normal king pow.

Kung not king
