Poirier's Four-Man BMF Title Tournament idea 'Sounds Fun'

LAS VEGAS – Dana White likes the idea of a four-man BMF title tournament that’s been proposed by Dustin Poirier.

Poirier (30-8 MMA, 22-7 UFC), who lost to Justin Gaethje by knockout in their BMF title fight at UFC 291, would love to enter that title picture again. The BMF title has since changed hands when Max Holloway scored an iconic knockout of Gaethje at UFC 300 in April.

Poirier knows he doesn’t have too many fights left in him but would be all in for a four-man BMF tournament between him, Gaethje (25-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC), Holloway (26-7 MMA, 22-7 UFC), and Dan Hooker (24-12 MMA, 14-8 UFC). Poirier has history with all three fighters, going 1-1 with Gaethje, and defeating both Holloway and Hooker.

“That excites me because that kind of stuff is for the dogs, man,” Poirier told MMA Today. “That’s like the old PRIDE days or grand prixs, you know? That’s a real BMF. If you can fight in a tournament in one night, multiple opponents, I mean, dude, that’s kind of the definition of a BMF.”

White, who’s instantly shot down other tournaments before, had a positive reaction when asked about Poirier’s idea.

“Sounds fun,” White said during a Dana White’s Contender Series 75 post-fight news conference at the UFC Apex. “Never thought about it, but yeah, I love it.”

A tournament would also excite Hooker, who responded on “X.”

“Don’t threaten me with a good time. 😂.”

Since losing his BMF title fight against Gaethje, Poirier rebounded with a knockout of Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 299. He then challenged lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 but fell short by fourth-round submission.

As for BMF champion Holloway, he will look to add another belt when he challenges featherweight champion Ilia Topuria in the UFC 308 main event Oct. 26 in Abu Dhabi.

Why do you need 3 fights? Maybe im missing something. 4 man is just 2 fights right?

No , winners move on , like OLD UFC Tournaments iirc

4 guys 2 fights=2 winners

2 winners fight=1 bmf

Thats 2 fights for the 2 winners.

So why cant they do 2 rounds, 3 rounds.

How are the rules written? Is it limited to one fight per night, or limited to 5 rounds per night? I’d assume the commissions have a limit on ‘fights’ as opposed to rounds, which makes a one night tourney a no go.

If it’s a 5 round limit, I suppose you could do the first fights as 2 rounds, but that is really limiting and could make determining a winner very difficult.

Make it a One-Night Tourny and I’d be more interested

I really hope this picks up some traction, only for BMF. I don’t like it for weight classes.

That would be sweet. It also would give the BMF title some added weight. You don’t just take the belt from the previous guy, you must win it in a one night tournament. That would be fucking sick, and they could do them at multiple, if not all, weight classes.

First round is the first fight of the PPV.

3 x 3 min rounds

Title fight is co-main ie 4th fight of the night.

3 x 5 min rounds

Get some lay and prayers for the 2nd and 3rd fights, lol.

Rico Verhoeven as the #1 Ranked HW Kickboxer put it on the line earlier this year and stepped into an 8-man One Night Tourney and came out on top. Much respect to him for doing that in 2024 and as the #1 going in to it. He didn’t have to do that in today’s game.

Even Invicta FC has put on One Night Tourneys in MMA in recent years

The One-Night Tournament especially in MMA just brings a lot of excitement and would make more sense for a BMF than just a one off Title Fight between 2 chosen Lightweights
 hopefully it comes back.

Legally fighters only get 5 rounds per night ive heard and im going by that.

No elbows first fight.

2nd fight should be 1 ten but 2 5 with a sudden death if needed
