Sakuraba had significantly better wrestling and submissions. He fought way bigger guys on steroids his whole career.

The classic fights like Sak can’t compare to the modern fighters. Training, diets, preparation, etc are so much improved.
Sak was awesome to watch, but DDP would dummy prime Sak.
Sakuraba smoked and drank and cut no weight and used no PEDs. He agreed to ridiculous concessions to his disadvantage. Cro cop wants kicks on the ground? Sure. I have to fight Igor Vovchchyn the hardest heavyweight puncher (still) in MMA history after fighting the longest (still) MMA match in history? Sure. Unless you saw Sakuraba’s career in real time, you probably don’t get how great he really was. Everyone he fought was an absolute terror. Bigger,stronger and on way more pharmaceuticals. His first 2 fights with Wanderlei were great and very close from what I recall.
To me it’s very easy to imagine him being a champion in the modern UFC. How many champions today are actually one dimensional? I can name several and only guys like Khabib would out wrestle him. He was so far ahead of his time he fought and won a UFC heavyweight tournament. He could have easily cut to 170.
I think overall MMA has improved. But I also think while many people think it’s just nostalgia talking, that there’s just as strong of a bias towards modern fighters and presuming they are so much better. I think Dricus is an awesome fighter, but he’s clearly got some glaring holes in his game. Sak wasn’t put into positions to win. He was pitted in unfavorable positions against the baddest mothers on the planet and the Japanese loved him and bet on him and made him the favorite. The mob got rich and he was admired for his bravery.

You guys know in the UFC he wouldnt get to face competition like Giles Arsene and Ryan Gracie right?
Also Sakuraba’s knees were absolutely destroyed fairly early in his career. Put Diplessis in place of Sak against the guys Sakuraba fought in PRIDE and please tell me how much better he would have faired.

First of all, please don’t act like Ryan Gracie was an easy fight. Second, nice cherry pick. Before Giles he fought Wanderlei(x2), Rampage, Cro Cop, Igor, Renzo, Royce, Guy, Royler, Vitor, Carlos Newton, Vernon Tiger White, Alan Goes, Conan and Kimo. I’m sorry how many of those guys under the same rules, would lose to Du Plessis?
