Rickson Gracie Complains ‘Diluted’ Jiu-Jitsu is Becoming a ‘Very Athletic Sport’

This is Thompson’s book. I’ve been meaning to read this for years.

@James_III… aren’t you the same?

Ok ?. .

Yes.

Yes she was.

It was a friendly grappling match. Nothing serious.

If they had fought under MMA rules, what makes you think Rickson would lie there or even allow Shultz to get him in the cradle position? You don’t think Rickson would have been aware of that?

Anyone who’s ever held a skilled black belt in a cradle knows it’s at best a stalling position. There’s no striking offense except meaningless knees. There are no headbutts from a cradle. It’s a mechanism to control someone and keep them on their back, which has utility if you understand truly dominant pins and strangles.

Don’t bother indulging in the fantasy that “if x was legal in that thing where it wasn’t legal, y would have happened. Trust me bro”

It makes me sick that Ricksons greatness will eventually be unable to be defended anymore because there is nobody left to tell the truth.

There are people around today who have rolled with him and continue to roll today, even with top level guys. Everyone on earth who ever rolled with him said his jiu jitsu is without compare. We are talking at a level exceeding the greatness of Jordan or Ali but just in more esoteric discipline.

Detractors will claim a modern purple belt would defeat him, but there are people alive right now that train with modern purple belts and have trained with Rickson. They are the only ones on Earth who can attest to his greatness. One day they will be gone and there will be nothing but haters left.

Fine, his MMA was a bunch of fights against cans, I agree. But I have rolled with a few guys that have experienced his jiu jitsu, and there has never been anyone that good, and there has never been anyone even close.

Rickson’s not wrong. Maybe he’s right for different reasons than he thinks though.

It takes a very, very long time get on top of a world class opponent, more time to pass the guard, and even more time yet to find a finish.

ADCC finals and super fights often aren’t even long enough for someone to actually win. When 2 people are grossly mismatched or one has some large relative deficiency, 6 or 10 minutes is enough. Two equally matches world class guys? The match is going to be decided by athleticism and understanding of the rules. And not athleticism in a “I pass your guard because I’m athletic” way, but rather in a “we have 6 or 8 minutes so the match will be decided at an artificial pace set by the rules”

I love ADCC but good God that turtle rule is a cancer that needs rooted out. Legalize ground strikes and/or have 30 minute matches if you want to know who’s best. If you’re going to compromise for fans and scheduling accommodations, be honest about what you’re doing.

Rickson is delusional about some things for certain, but this isn’t one of them.

Agreed. People can shit on his MMA accomplishments and his fake record, but his abilities on the mat shouldn’t be in question. This nonsense about modern purple belts beating him is crazy.

You know who says shit like that? People that think jiu jitsu is just a set of techniques. So since Rickson hasn’t trained and “memorized” the defenses to modern attacks, that he would fall victim to them. They don’t understand that true mastery of jiu jitsu transcends “techniques”.

Ok ?. .

Rorion has a reasonably high IQ and used it.

It’s like going back in time at least a decade plus. These topics have been discussed so many times over the years…sometimes the threads would turn into World War 3, people would get pissed and lose their minds. :joy:

Oh yeah, Rickson who never fought anyone worth a shit in mma could just wave his magic wand and keep Mark Fucking Schultz from putting him in a cradle.

And btw, you don’t get out of a cradle… perhaps you don’t understand the hold Rickson was in.

He thinks Dan Severn would have defeated Royce Gracie if they had fought in UFC 5 “super fight” LMAO. This guy’s delusional.

You also don’t accomplish anything with a cradle. The guy cradled can just rest and recover

Let me settle the 25yo Rickson vs Gordon Ryan question

In 1999 the oil Sheiks of ADCC couldn’t afford Rickson’s asking price to do a Superfight against Mario Sperry

You read that right

As for Rickson vs Mark Schultz

In 1 month of training Mark Schultz was even with Pedro Sauer BB at practice at 3 months he was submitting all of them.

Zero training Mark Schultz was submitted 2x in 45 minutes by the “greatest BJJ practitioner to walk the earth”

2x in 1 hour with zero training

  • do you think that is an impressive feat???
