Velasquez vs Lesnar

I enjoyed it when Goldie commentated. “Spinning out of control” was a classic.

Cain had a short but great career. He was always injured and I would have liked to have seen how great he really couldve been. He seemed to train like a retard.

I remember the Leg extension video,

He was then plagued by knee injuries

Its one of the fights/moments that defines that peak era of the UFC.

That early 10s HW division was so exciting, best its ever been in the UFC even though in the end it didnt quite live up to its potential.

I might still argue it lol. Great fighter but when he beat Brock, he wasn’t too far removed from almost getting slept by Kongo about 3 times in one fight. Before Brock, his best win was a broken down Nog. After Brock (who had what, 5 fights?) it was the KO by JDS followed by wins over JDS and Bigfoot.

Even if you add Werdum to that, I still can’t put that career over that other HW GOAT. Probably.

Just because I had a gif lol. Fun fight. Kongo almost finished a few times but Cain dominated otherwise and hit some very nice takedowns.

Good points for sure. How Cain kept coming forward in that Kongo fight is what impressed me because he was certainly rocked. In this hypothetical I proposed it also assumes Cain eventually fights/beats guys like Stipe and Francis for an incredibly long reign.

I blame his Strength and conditioning coach for that not Cain himself. Had he had a good one he likely wouldn’t of had the fraction of the injuries that he did and had a longer and busier career.

Just look at this shit his coach was a fool and clearly knew little to nothing about injury prevention.

Can anyone explain the benefits of this, outside of a torn quadriceps muscle?

Is this good for explosiveness? His form is very inconsistent due to his coach’s emphasis on speed and power, so I’m not sure what this is for.

I think the coach had such a lack of knowledge of exercise science that he generally believed that this was somehow making Cain into an invincible beast by just working each and every muscle group as hard as he could.

No pain no gain kind of thing and that pain is just weakness leaving the body etc etc

Yeah definitely. The loss to Werdum was legit and with Francis I think he was past his prime, but honestly the way it happened, it could have happened in his prime too.

When Weidman was coming up he reminded me a lot of Cain. Weidman was 9-0 when he fought Anderson the first time and Cain was 8-0. Both guys were destroying everyone, albeit Cain a little more emphatically.

I think if Cain wasn’t injured after the Browne fight he would have become a champion again. Weidman went in a completely different direction.

Insane that Cain had a 13 year career, and only 16 total fights.

Yeah it seems pretty stupid.

I would understand if this was for a specific reason or benefit but something tells me this is what he had Cain do all the time.

Except the one time he was getting pounded and got up from the beating and sub our own Shane carwin

Brock wasn’t always a front runner

NDA would be all over this

Werdum was an absolute monster. I picked him over both Fedor and Cain. Fedor was on the decline, having had problems in his 2 previous fights (Rogers and Arvloski). I thought he was a terrible matchup for Cain because he had legit standup - Cain was primarily a puncher on standup whereas Werdum had punches, kicks, knees and a good Thai clinch game. Guys that are primarily punchers on standup usually get taken apart by guys with more variety to their game. On the floor he was exceptionally skilled and also a big, strong guy. I thought that was bad news for Cain. As soon as I saw Cain was struggling to get him down and was getting tied up on the inside I knew he was going to lose. Werdum is the forgotten man of the HW division in many ways.

This.

Werdum has one of the best and most extensive resumes in heavyweight history.

Reminds me of the Tom Platz style.

I understand in those days people were more ignorant about the effects of going all out for isolation exercises like that but Cain’s coach should definitely have known better by the 2010s.

Just watching that Tom Platz video makes me uneasy. Very surprised that he wasn’t heavily plagued with knee injuries for most of his career.

Nah he crumpled in that fight too, and then Shane gassed and got reversed. If Shane could have kept the pressure that fight would have been over.

That fight makes the ginger virgin aka Vegito aka Dick Niaz Army cry

God damn, feels like yesterday. I met Jones backstage at the presser and a ton of the fighters at the fighters hotel leading up to it. Jones was a super nice guy, Tito was nice as well but a little… uh Titarded if you will. Cain was like talking to a cave man, seemed nice but you couldn’t get much out of him.
