Egan Inoue recounts an unforgettable entrance into the world of Jiu-Jitsu, tutored privately by his brother before ever stepping foot in a formal class. Eganâs unconventional path to martial arts mastery culminates in a humorous yet pivotal moment during his first official class, where, under his brotherâs mischievous plan, he surprises everyone with his advanced skills. The climax of Eganâs tale is his unexpected encounter with Relson Gracie, the class instructor, where Eganâs adept execution of a triangle choke leads to an unforeseen outcome, putting Gracie to sleep. This incident humorously highlights the unforeseen consequences of hidden talent and the complex dynamics within martial arts training. Eganâs story is not just about a memorable class but also about the lessons learned in humility, respect, and the unexpected journeys that martial arts can take us on.
Lolol thatâs pretty hilarious. Love hearing old stories like this. Iâd imagine Relson wanted to kill him.
When Egan was starting out, Relson was BJJ in Hawaii.
I wish 12 year old me didnât want to be a ninja in Pearl City. LOL
I remember both the Enson and Egan in the classes. The Onzuka twins were blue or purple and then Scott was the brown belt. Good times, good times. I did a ton of my training in Relsonâs garage in Kahala.
Did you train with Andy Wang?
The names I remember are Carl Franks, Egan & Enson, Romulo (from the big island), the Onzuka twins, Scott Devine, and Relson. Brazilians stopped in all the time (some were some rugged ass Mufuckers) and Royce was there at that one point but I didnât see him.
Enson and Egan opened âGrappling Unlimitedâ or something like that on their own. You couldnât train at both places on that island. It was one or the other.
Samoa are you a policeman?
I heard blue belt Baret Yoshida put Royce in a triangle and could have slept him but let him out because of respect. Royce repaid his kindness with subbing him roughly. I didnât see this however but it is common knowledge.
I wasnât there for the Royce visit. Baret was a star from the beginning. I donât remember him at Relsonâs but he was a bad ass at Eganâs school.
No. Lots of Hamos are though
my buddy had a similiar situation, he was a brown belt at the time. roy was doing a seminar a his academy. roy was showing some basic selft defense, you know the infamous front kick to the clinch and other the stuff like bjj chest , where you an your partner roll with one move at the a time. its hard to explain but if you ever went to roy gracie seminar iâm sure he showed it. anyways after the seminar they did live rolls. it was my buddys turn to roll with roy and when they tied up we felt roy was like what marc laimon said albout him. he did let roy sub him with a cross collar choke from the guard out of respect.
I joined 3 months after Baret joined and Baret was already subbing people left and right. He was a phenom.
When he subbed Shaolin as a blue belt, we werenât surprised. He was in there from morning to night.
What did Laimon say about him?
