The legendary Joe Lewis never called himself Master, it was always Joe. I always said Mr. Lewis or Sir! He was rough.

The only martial arts instructors who can legally use the term “Master” are those recognized by the World Martial Arts Council (WMAC) sanctioning body.

And it doesn’t get any more legitimate than that

I think people get too hung up on this. To me it’s a sign of deference. If the guy’s a black belt, he’s considered, to most observers, to be a master. I call my coach professor when we are in class and I’m addressing him in front of people, otherwise, he’s Mike. It’s like at work. My boss shows up to a scene and he’s “Lieutenant.” When it’s just us and the guys, he’s Marc. There is a benefit to maintaining rank and structure.

In the old days, a head master ran a school and was called school master … Kwan jan nim. Kwan means school

It was that simple and you had to get a license to run a school from the city council which was a test.

Then we got dan rankings and it all went to shit

To be fair, it’s the Portuguese/Brazilian word for teacher.

Which makes it even gayer that these fuckers call em that and then go on about eating AÇAÍ. We get it, you’re Brazilian now

I teach bjj. My students call me by my name or “coach”.

If someone calls me “professor” I just smile and let it slide but I’d prefer my name or coach.

One guy always calls me “professor” and it’s hilarious because he absolutely smokes me on the mat. Often times I have had him show the students techniques that he fucks me up with.

It’s like, “Hey guys, Super Stud Man is here today and he’s going to show us this…”

He’ll step up and say, “Thanks, professor” and then start teaching the techniques.

Kiss my converse!

when it comes to teaching and sharing of knowledge I do not see the term “Professor” as being unwarranted.

I will always humbly consider myself a student of “Professor Redneck” :innocent:

…calling some StripMall “Martial Arts” teacher “MASTER” though just seems kind of CHEEZY

As a humble bjj coach I don’t care if my students say master, professor, coach or my name. As long as they avert their gaze downward as they say it. My magnificence is not to be taken in casually,

My buddy said he trains BJJ and his “sensei” is a badass that beats people up in bars and killed people in combat in the special forces.

This is one of my best friends that is a really good dude.

I’m thinking he must have just started BJJ at the wrong school or something.

There’s so many bad bjj/mma gyms. Less now than the big boom after TUF.

Hopefully it just sounds cheesey. Where abouts do you live?

Sounds like he screwed up his inputs in the DeLorean. He went back to 1995.
