Thoughts on Martial Arts Teachers Using the term "Master"?

discuss

I wonder how many martial arts teachers there are who’s last name is Bates :joy:

I avoid most dojos run by asians because they think they are “jedi.” Terms such as master or grandmaster are cringe. No need to use those terms.

Total slave owner appropriation and I’m against it.

I hate it. Professor is the worst. I’m a bjj instructor and I prefer either just my first name or if you have to, coach

seems kind of LARPy

stfu your names toby

I prefer Sensei.

I prefer senpai

BJJ and boxing are different. I don’t think I called anyone who trained me anything other than their name. Imagine calling someone Master

It’s ridiculous. I was at no gi worlds this week and whenever I heard “professor” yelled out I winced. That one kills me for some reason. I’ve never heard someone in real life want to be called master

If you go to a gym and they call any of the following:

-a coach a master /sinsei

-call practice, “class”

  • call a gym a dojo

  • wrestle in pajamas with belts

Leave and find another gym.

Yeah that’s very cringe. I couldn’t do it. I probably couldn’t even roll there with that cringey atmosphere either. I’m surprised it was No Gi. Seems like something the pajama wrestlers would say

Bow to your sensei, student …respect my class!

No hate. The gi/ martial art larping shit " id just Teh Ghey. "

And the sociopaths that run those Mcdojos try to run them like a cult and all of the pajama wrestling trained monkeys worship them for the dream of shiny colored belts.

For the record. I think GI BJJ is a very technical sport and I respect those who compete in it.

For the cult sociopath senseis and their cult dojos…I mock that side of the sport.
