And Jordan played for the Wizards…

Doesn’t take away from the GOAT run.

List the cans Fedor fought.

Yeah, he fought a couple.

Start with his first fight in Pride and go up to his first loss vs Werdum.
His Rings run was impressive but we’ll skip it for simplicity.
That’s 22 flights over about 7.5 years where he was not only dominant – but hardly dropped a round.
I count 3 so-called “cans” during that period.
Ogawa was not a can, and neither was Hong Man Choi.

So even if you take away the 3 “cans”, that’s still 19 fights against a murderers row of competition, at Heavyweight!

So obviously, this was not an accurate statement.

Jordan’s legacy would be a bit better if he didn’t play for the Wizards, but it didn’t do too much damage. Jordan was 38 when he first played for the Wizards and he’d taken three seasons off. Fedor was 33 when he lost to Werdum, and 34 when he lost to Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson. He lost three fights in a row spanning when he was 33 and 34.

It’s not the same.

I’m a big Fedor fan though, and the undefeated run he had was amazing. GSP’s record is more pristine though, and I think he fought better competition.

Fighting and ball sports are not the same thing.

“It’s not the age, it’s the mileage”

Also consider this:

With ball sports, a bad game, even a bad season, is recoverable.
It’s a much larger sample size.

With fighting, a couple great wins or bad losses can really define a legacy.

Nobody has come close to what Fedor did – not even Jones.

GSP isn’t beating Big Nog.

Very few great fighters “quit while they’re ahead”.
There’s a lot of money involved for one thing – and these guys don’t have big shoe endorsements.

Think about this – Fedor has more finishes than John Jones has fights.

Fedor is absolutely the GOAT.

Everyone else is fighting for second place.

Who is John Jones?

Which leads to one of the main arguments for GSP as GOAT. He only has two losses and he avenged them. He avenged his loss to Serra with a stoppage, and he avenged his loss to Hughes twice, stopping him both times.

Not only does GSP have the more pristine record, but he faced better competition. If you want to say that Fedor was old for his last three losses, that’s debatable, but losing to Werdum, Bigfoot Silva, and Henderson, all in a row and all by stoppage, while Fedor was 33 and 34 years old, makes it hard to put him over GSP. Fedor didn’t avenge any of those losses either.

Fedor was definitely amongst the best but his record doesn’t stack up next to GSP’s in terms of win/loss and losses avenged, and in terms of the quality of competition.

A two division UFC champ that faced elite competition, with only two losses, both of which he avenged by stoppage, with one of those losses being avenged twice via stoppage. Fedor’s career doesn’t measure up to GSP’s.

I should’ve said cans, inexperienced and undersized opponents. Has any heavyweight in history ever fought so many MWs?

Together they include: Arona, Hasdell, Babalu, Haseman, Valavicius, Nagata, Ogawa (debatable), Zulu, Lindland, Choi, Henderson, Ishii, Singh, Sonnen and Rampage.

He’s still the best HW ever and top 3 in my list. But he was punching down so frequently in his prime where he was supposed to be the best in the world that it marrs his image in my mind.

Here’s another way to look at some of the gimme fights, especially in the PRDE era. Other than Barnett, Fedor fought and beat every top heavyweight they had. He stayed incredibly active and at times fought people that did not make sense looking back at it, however who else was he going to fight? There was also a lot of risk if Fedor would have lost any of those fights.

There were some interesting fighters that he didn’t fight during his Pride era including Kharitonov, Overeem and Werdum.

+1

I’ve noticed the gay GSP fans put him on the GOAT list because he never failed a drug test.

People that think GSP was clean during his entire career are idiots.

GSP never won tournaments.

GSP never fought under 2 different rules sets and succeeded.

GSP lost in the first 10 years of his career.

GSP would have gotten yellow carded to death in pride and couldn’t use his elbow. Since there was no WW he would have gone to MW where he would get eaten alive by anderson Silva who was 2-2 in pride

They all take PEDs ypu numbskulls

Fair points. GSP lost to the at the time GOAT at WW by making a bad decision. In their two rematches he completely outclassed that same fighter and finished him. GSP also did not take a guy who won the Ultimate Fighter seriously and got finished. When they rematched, that fighter had nothing for GSP in a completely one sided win for Georges. The other fighter who gave GSP a good fight and “won” the first round in their initial match stayed on the stool instead of coming out to fight after claiming they would go “to the death”.

In Pride GSP would have been able to use knees on the ground along with being able to do soccer kicks. GSP with soccer kicks?!?!?!

There is no reason for me not to think GSP could have done the same thing to Silva that Chael did while avoiding being submitted.

He would have gotten yellow carded in pride for his stalling.

No more elbows > posturing up to strike > more submission attempts

Stalling > yellow cards

GSP would have been undersized in pridefc and would have a couple of losses.

Opponents records when GSP fought them.

Opponents records after GSP beat them.

That is all

The best part is when he dipped into 185, won the belt then ghosted out
