I thought he would. And he got taken down but was creating a lot of scrambles. Obviously he got finished but I think if he made it out of that, he would have had a good chance of winning.
I think the key turning point, was when Whittaker managed to escape and get back to his feet and separate and then Khamzat immediately shot in and took him down again. That must be so demoralising.
Also, Whittaker has managed to deal with the grappling of guys like Jacare and Romero and beat them. He may not be in his prime anymore, but I havent seen anyone steamroll him like that before. Even when DDP beat him it wasn’t that dominant.
Chimaev had an impressive fight yesterday and looked great. Can’t say anything bad about it. Perfect performance.
That said, he arguably lost to Burns and Usman. He’s not that great of a fighter past the first round. If you think one great performance makes a guy unstoppable then you haven’t been watching very long.
I agree other than fighting scared, he doesn’t fight scared imo. But he’s managing his career like he’s scared. Maybe he’s getting bad advice, but he better be careful because people are going to forget about him and he’s not so exciting that he can afford to be out of sight and out of mind.
You guys know better than I about MMA but having spent 11 years wrestling and 30 years coaching the sport … IMHO Bo has the proper instincts to transition perfectly to MMA. I may be wrong … GSP never wrestled a regular match and was one of the best MMA grapplers I have ever seen. I also think Bo would fight more often but 1. Dana is slow tracking him and 2. Not many guys want to jump in there with someone who can dictate where the fight happens like Khabib did.
