These men have arguably beaten jones and the blueprint is there.
- lateral movement
- Low lead leg kicks
- Body shots when he uses long guard
- Don’t back up to cage, angle out and take center
- Never fight flat footed
Cyril gane would win a rematch and he pulled off the biggest choke job since he had the style to win.
Jones rarely fought guys his size or taller, who can throw leg kicks.
Perreria is a live dog but he doesn’t move laterally enough like Gustafson (fight 1) and Reyes in order for me to call him a favourite.

I doubt that. He has the standup to beat Jones on the feet. But his ground game is the worst in the UFC.

Vitor was too small for Jon and didn’t have the power to “Lesnar” Jon. If someone like Vitor - punching speed, size and power - we’d see Jon wobble. Everytime he gets hit, he runs. He runs to get distance, to reset. No one has ever taken advantage of that. No one has ever chased him to take advantage of this vulnerability.
Bottom line, all of his opponents have let him run and reset, all for him to set up his long range game over and over again.

Great striking / god tier TDD is the ideal matchup. The combo hasn’t existed at LHW/HW at a high enough level. Peak JDS was probably the closest, but no.
Another interesting fantasy matchup is 2015 Werdum with his striking and GOAT tier BJJ, but still no.

Gustaffson had the best shot against Jones and came the closest. Reyes was winning for a while but Gus was legitimately fucking him up. If not for that spinning elbow I think the judges give it to Gus. If you think about it, there has never been another fighter that moves like Gus at 205, and was elite. Nobody in that division has had the combination of varied striking, TDD, footwork and angles that Gus had.
It took his best night to push Jon and on Jon’s worst/off night, he eeked it out. I truly think that version of Gus beats almost any other 205 champ in history. That’s how good he was. He was never the same after that fight, I’m sure the loss is all he ever thought about. Sort of like Gastelum after he lost to Izzy.

Jones spider limbs make him unbeatable, even at HW. Jon would dad strength bully Tommy boy. He would trip him probably, then reign down shots to purposefully cut Aspinall, before finally reigning enough shots to stop the fight by Dan Mirgliotta
Jones is a complete fighter that was bigger (and longer) than all the complete 205 fighters. Now JBJ is a heavyweight complete fighter in a shallow division with no complete fighters.
