What am i missing, he never missed weight?
So GSP was a big WW - went up for Bisping but no one else.
Silva was a big mw - didnt go up for jones
Khabib was a big LW.
Because they are big and still make weight are we to disregard their legacys?
There are plenty of big guys that make weight but arent that good.
Because fedor was a small HW and dominated is impressive, but maybe cutting wasnt for him (like it isnt for a lot of guys) and he enjoyed the speed aspect better.
Iām not disregarding his legacy.
Iām saying he was capable of moving up to HW years before he did.
The reason he didnāt, is because HW was still stacked with killers, and he knew he would lose.
He waited until the situation was most beneficial to him, and moved up to be a 2 division champ.
Doing this does not and should not rank him among all-time HWs.
Ah i see.
I see jones as the goat fighter, not hw fighter.
Goat hw is fedor.
I have Fedor as the GOAT HW and the absolute GOAT.
Jones is the GOAT LHW.
If Jones fought Pride era Fedor, I believe Fedor would win.
And i disagree about not moving up because of killers. Cormier is up there for recent hw fighters.
The cut to LHW didnt deplete cormier yet jones toyed with him.
Yeah he could have moved up earlier, but why? He was beating a plethora of ex champs and up and comers.
Weāll never know
Ring id go fedor / cage jones
His lengthy dimensions =/= weight advantage
I disagree.
First of all, I donāt think Jones toyed with DC.
I think they were both close competitive fights. The first fight I think Jones edged DC out in the championship rounds due to a cardio edge. Second fight was very close and DC might have even had a slight edge until the kick landed.
I think DC was better at HW and I would have liked to see that matchup at HW because I think itās a different fight.
We donāt know what cardio edge Jones would maintain with the added weight and with DC not having to cut, etc.
As far as the timingā¦
Iām not talking about when he was on his initial run fighting guys like Machida and Rampage.
Iām talking about the around the last decade, when he was mostly going the distance vs guys closer to his size, and there were still killers in the HW division.
Look at when he finally decided to move up.
It was obviously strategic.
And not to toot my own horn ā but I called it, and had been saying for years on the previous site that Jones would wait until just the right time to make his move up to HW.
And he did pretty much exactly as I predicted.
And sure, itās his perogotive.
But letās not use this little HW bump as a deciding factor in the GOAT conversation.
Heās basically a paper champion in the weakest HW division we have seen in a long time. He got his title vs a guy who didnāt even show up to fight, and is going to defend it against a 42 years old coming off a loss who was basically retired.
DC at HW would have been interesting.
Stipe years ago.
Werdum.
Overeem.
Etcā¦
But no.
Instead we get whatās happening nowā¦
Tom would KO Jones within 3 rounds.
