He was only favorite because nobody had seen him lose yet.
Those of us who were paying attention saw him clearly declining.
He had fallen in love with his hands for one thing, which is almost always a harbinger of decline. And his body was noticably physically softer. And of course his attitude and the things he was saying about winning it losing being in God’s hands, stuff like that.
He wasn’t training hard, he wasn’t mixing it up, and he was starting to fight one-dimensionally.
These are all very clear signs that specifically coincide with his decline.
It’s not even arguable. It’s common knowledge for anyone honest who was paying attention.
At the very least, it’s obvious in hindsight.
You don’t just get to freeze a moment in time and ignore the surrounding context.
There were plenty of us noticing Fedor’s decline and talking about it here – but until he actually lost – nobody was going to believe the run was over until we saw it.
Saying Fedor was in his prime in Strikeforce is similar to saying Tyson was in his prime in the 90s.
All you needed to do is watch the way they moved to see the obvious difference.
The difference with Fedor and Tyson is, Fedor was on top for the better part of a decade – long enough that the legacy was pretty much set in stone. Long enough so the decline can’t really take away from it.

Shogun was 29 in his prime and lhw champ. Rashad got injured so bones stepped in short notice after beating bader and embarrassed Shogun in the most one sided title fight in memory.

In the fight before he lost to Jones he ended the dragon era in his best UFC performance.
Yea he was old and past it.
Jones beat future bellator hw champ baders ass (who also knocked out Fedor) then took a short notice title fight against the most feared man in the game and did this.
Y’all know that Shogun tore his knee again in the takedown attempt right before he KOed Machida with that counter counter in the Hematch.
So he was fresh off a knee surgery and he always rushes back too early.
That said the real problem with that fight is the dozens of eye pokes and the raking of eyes on the ground…the kicking of a freshly repaired knee is weak but legal.
Jon Jones is absolutely a shitshow of a legacy, it is just filled with fucked up stuff, inside the ring, outside the ring, under the ring…

UFC Shogun was a slower and plodding headhunter compared to his peak self.
Before his injuries he was one of the most explosive and dynamic fighters we have ever seen.
UFC Shogun was still abnormally tough and still packed dynamite in his strikes – so he could fight through his limitations.
I don’t think I have seen any serious person state that UFC Shogun was better than Pride Shogun.
It makes zero sense to anyone with functioning eyesight.
